If I am understanding your question correctly. The volumn pumped consistes of H2O, Kcal from Fats, CHO, Prot; Vitamins and minerals. Baby is growing a using huge amouts of energy (KCAL from the fat and CHO) she is using the protein to build tissue, the Vitamin and minerals for the metabolic reactions to happen. She pees off the liquid and pees off and poops off the byproducts of metabolism.
So she is taking in great amout of volumn but she is using it to grow and it is not a 1:1 ratio.

Subject: measuring mom's milk, weight vs. volume?

Hello Wise ones,
I need a scientific mind (Julia Barrett, where are you?) to help me answe=
r=20
a question posed by the husband of a client. This lovely couple have jus=
t=20
become parents for the first time. Both are in their mid-40's and he is =
a=20
chemist. Baby delivered at 37 wks via c-sect weighing just 3 and a half=20=

pounds, due to a large fibroid that was impairing baby's growth. Mom=20
initiated pumping and is producing great milk volume, and baby is even=20=

nursing very well. Left the NICU at 10days old, no monitors at all. So=20=

what's the problem??
     They rented a gram scale and are checking several times per day. He=
r=20
gain is great, about an ounce per day. Dad is concerned that the amount=20=

of intake in grams does not equal the amount of weight the baby gains. H=
e=20
says that cc's and ml's are liquid measurements, and grams are mass=20
measurements. Thankfully, this baby is doing very well, but I'm a bit=20=

confused by his concern. Can any of you enlighten me, not so much to=20
explain to him, but to understand the question myself!
     (Please, let's not revisit the issue of whether test weights are=20
necessary or helpful.)  Thanks!

whose background is obviously not in chemistry
