Hello! I'm Colette (CLC) from soggy Massachusetts. Please fellow
Lactnetter's correct me if I am wrong...
Pregnancy does not mean one has to stop breastfeeding. If the mother has a
history of pre-term labor, etc. her doctor MAY advise her to wean.
Many women have successfully nursed one baby/toddler through pregnancy with
no ill affects. Some things that may happen is that the milk may change
taste and the nursling may not like it and the supply may drop some. Mom
may get sore nipples at some point during pregnancy and find nursing
uncomfortable.
A fetus is kinda like a parasite (sorry for the bad analogy...babies are
blessings!!!) they will take from the mother's system what it
needs...translation, for the most part the mom would be the one to suffer
before the baby in that instance. Increasing caloric intake is usually
advised as well as being well hydrated and taking prenatal vitamins.
Breastfeeding and birth control...if using breastfeeding as birth control
there are several factors to be followed to be effective....exclusively
breastfeeding and all sucking needs are met at the breast (no pacifiers,
bottles, nursing day and night, etc.), mother's period has not returned,
baby is younger than 6 months. This form of birth control is said to be 98%
effective.

Subject: Breastfeeding and pregnant

Hello, I am new to the list. My name is Claire Pipes,MS,LDN,RD, I am a
Public Health Nutritionist( new to this aarena I have 20 years in the
acute care, long term care, home care & hospice settings.

Problem: I have a patient with a 6 month old solely breastfed, she is now
pregnant again- she now knows BF is not a form of birth control- Problem is
baby will not take formula at all in any way shape or form. Baby is onsomon
some food and is healthy and well nourished. The mother is in tears over
the thought of having to DC the BFing. We are limited on the WIC we can
provide and the carnation good start and goats milk is not on the list. I
don't think the Feds would approve of evaporated milk idea.

Question?? Can she continue to BF while she is Pregant ifPregnant special
instructions? Would BFing pull to much nutrition from the mother and not
have enough for the fetus if she increase Kcal, nutrition and take he
prenatal MVI's. Will the utrine contrauterinefrom BF cause spontanious
aspontaneousf the consinous is tconsensushat do we suggest she feed baby,
goats milk, carnation good start, evaporated milk and H2O -you know the old
fashioned formula?
TX's for the help.
