There is research evidence that breast massage improves pumped milk 
output in mothers of preterm infants (I think Hill and Aldag are the 
authors of the studies) as does simultaneous (double) pumping. The 
massage only has to be for a few seconds according to their research. 
One of the researchers demonstrated it for me at ILCA one year - they 
taught moms to put a fist lightly on the breast, and roll it toward the 
nipple, move the fist across the breast and repeat, twice. That was the 
whole "massage".
I am a firm believer in the easier we make things for moms, the more 
likely they are to do it. So I encourage moms to keep the massage very 
brief and keep the pump in an accessible location.
