The great irony of being told to wean for a mammogram is that the premature weaning itself contributes to future cancer risk.  

But this mom does have a lump, right?  If her docs are uneasy about reading a lactation mammogram, they could check with Ruth Lawrence's Lactation Study Center in Rochester, NY, at 585-275-0088.  They get to talk MD to MD and get reassurance that mammograms, biopsies, and other "breast tests" are done all the time on lactating breasts.
