I have mixed emotions about the visiting hour restrictions. What drives
this is those horrible Press Ganey surveys. Patient satisfaction. They want to
show off the baby to everyone. In our hospital we have largely Hispanic
families that have the patient totally exhausted. They have fits with visitor
limitations and try to sneak more than the 4 (not including Dad and sibilings)
in to visit. They don't know when it is time to go...I can be walking out
late and it's almost 9 pm and they are still coming in the front door.
Weekends are the worst, unless it's raining or it's the Super Bowl or something
like that. Even directly after a hurricane they come. I try to tell all my
Moms you need to take a nap this afternoon. Especially since we have a high
Cesarean rate. You can educate all you want but in the long run the
grandmothers are the ones who will win the education on visitors and rest. I can quote
study after study to no avail. Only when grandma who has had a lot of kids
says "Listen" does it take hold.
Even when my one daughter was in a hospital in NY that had the "old
fashion" visiting hours did I have to stand my ground and tell my son in law ..."you
got to limit the visitors". Baby was born on Monday and by Friday she was
just totally exhausted. I tried to get her to nap and nurse lying down, but
he was like "no way". I just had to wait until my other son in law took him
sledding and I sent Jenny and baby to bed. When he came in he was livid, I
told him everyone was okay. Now almost 3 years later they can't get her out of
their bed. Sometimes it takes a little time. I will take study quoted back
to my boss, but I bet only the staff would vote for the change. Management
won't because it will bring down the scores on the surveys.
Happy New Year to all.
