Yes, you're right Jodine and I'm afraid that many health care
professionals...even those who are otherwise knowledgeable about
breastfeeding, including LCs, do not have confidence in breastfeeding such
that they believe that relactation actually works. You've only got to read
many of the lactation texts to discover how widespread this belief is.
Unfortunately this lack of confidence is passed onto mothers....and then
their belief that relactation doesn't work is often reaffirmed, it's a self
fulfilling prophecy. I think
that things *have* gotten better here in Australia. I think because I've
been talking about the fact that relactation works at conferences etc for
the past few years and the word seems to have gotten out to mothers so that
ABA here does get quite a few contacts about relactation and adoptive
breastfeeding from mothers wanting information.
I think that a lot of breastfeeding advocates think that relactation is not
something that they need to know about because they don't see a lot of it
but it's really quite a fundamental aspect of lactation that everyone should
know about because there are many implications that apply to more commonly
experienced situations.
