I agree with Janice, I didn't like the overall tone of this article. This
is absolutely the first time in my 26 years of helping breastfeeding mothers
that I've heard this: "it is also messy. Breastfed babies' excretions are
softer, though less smelly, than those of formula-fed babies." So, one of
the disadvantages of breastfeeding is that breastfed babies have softer
stools, making them harder to clean! Good grief! Next thing they'll be
telling us is that one disadvantage of breastfeeding is that it is more
expensive because the child is more likely to live, so that you will have to
pay for college! I found this article to be not well-written from an
editorial standpoint, and some of the things mentioned were just utterly
ridiculous. I found it hard to take it seriously. They made some good
points about breastfeeding, but they were all but lost in the overall tone.
Like this statement, "There are social taboos against public breastfeeding,
even though women in New Jersey have a legal right to do so." The way it's
presented, it advances the notion that the social taboos outweigh legal
rights. The writer was all over the page on whether breastfeeding is a good
or bad thing, but for the most part we were presented in the "bad" category.
An all-round write-off of an article, imho!

<<I'm somewhat uneasy at the overall "tone" - still very much that
breastfeeding is best, but formula is fine, and nurses that push
breastfeeding are zealots.>>
