We need to remember that new moms
are in the formal acquisition of parenting, and want to do it RIGHT. They
want rules, and they will listen to everyone -- and get horrendously
confused
if they get differing opinions.
I also couldn't see the whole article just a paragraph. But did want to
comment on what Jan Barger said.
This is what I hear over and over in LLL mtgs! Moms want to do it right and
ask which way is "right". They tell me about how every nurse that comes in
tells them something different and every book they read says something different
too and then of course they come to LLL and hear something different again!
Who to believe, who is right they want to know. They feel frustrated. We
often hear the phrase babies don't come with instructions and I think the reason
they don't and can't is because mom/babies/families are different and there
would have to be a million books.
I try to convey that the "right way" and the "rules" (ie bf 8-12 times and
other things like that) are guidelines for the general mom/baby pair but then
*you* and *baby* find what works for you both and something always works
differently for everyone. Try and find your inner voice and your baby's voice and
follow it after hearing all the many different things about breastfeeding.
I try to point how each pumping mom has their own way of how long and often
they need to pump or how one mom found she introduced a pacifier at 3 wks with
no problems while another mom found she couldn't without baby not latching
right. All different choices and all moms "right" in what they do.
