This is a hot issue for me as working in a CHildren's hospital I see what can
happen when a mom is NOT GIVEN a nipple shield (jaundice, dehydration,
hypoglycemia, LMS, breastfeeding failure). Then when I observe baby try to go to
breast and it becomes obvious why they are there. They have OBVIOUS
oroboobular discombobulation and there is no way its going to work without one--SO YEs
YEs YES! If it fixes the breastfeeding--USE them! Its worth the MINOR risk
of having to use them for months or til weaning. One can also err on the side
of caution and have mom pump and supplement if worried about transfer--better
too much milk than not enough. Better some breastfeeding than none at all (I
see some moms sent home with babies not latching adequately or at all and told
to just keep trying????!!!) Chris
