Hi, All: What is the hospital policy re: milk storage on units other than
OB? I recently was able to place a breast pump on some of our other units
(day surgery, ER, MICU, Cardiac) for use by a breastfeeding mother admitted
to one of these units. The nursing staff is thrilled to be able to have
easy access to a pump for their patients. The med-surg director asked me
how the milk was to be stored - on OB we have a separate
refrigerator/freezer in the nursery for human milk. Obviously, this is not
possible on other units. I recommended that the milk be placed in labeled
bottles in a ziploc lab specimen bag in the refrigerator (which is used for
juices, milk, other refrigerated foods for the patients) until the
patient's family can take the milk home for the baby, which has been the
practice in the past. I have an e-mail in to our infection control nurse,
also. I did look briefly on HMBA's web site, but didn't see this
particular topic addressed and did a brief achive search with no results.
Can anyone offer some advice?
