Wendy, this would be a situation where a good test weight would answer
the question and reassure the mother. Sorry, I just had to throw that in!

I would want to know birth weight, discharge or lowest weight, the
re-hospitalization initial and then discharge weights, and the current
weight. Without these, we are stabbing in the dark.

I would guess one of three things: 1) it could be that mom has a very
abundant milk supply and all baby has to suck is 5 minutes to receive
3-4 ounces from one breast. Lots of bowel movements with mucous and some
green would indicate not enough fat, 2) oral motor problems indicated by
low test weights (intake) and poor weight gain -- always hungry because
he doesn't get enough at one time, 3) a baby who needs to be close to
his mother to get over the trauma of his illness. Wearing baby in a
sling would probably help.

Sometimes a mom complains to me that baby nurses "all the time" and when
I have her count back every feeding for 24 hours, it turns out she
nursed 6-7 only! And that she considers this amount "all the time"
whereas we know this is too low.

Hope the weight check tomorrow shows a good gain. Poor baby! LLLove, Kathy
