Lee quoted me,
<<Jan, I read what you wrote: “I'm not sure breastfeeding can withstand all
the assaults. Not to mention lactation consultants. And normal birthing
proponents.
I'm old. Maybe retirement?” >>
And then said:
<<My reaction was: Been there and felt the same way BUT we can’t give up
(and I think you wouldn’t).
We need to stay in this field and work for what is right, what we believe
in; otherwise, those who don’t believe in breastfeeding (or natural childbirth)
will have won.>>
Lee, you are absolutely right. And I'm not giving up the fight. It's just
that some days, things look so bleak....
It's discouraging when you walk into the hospital room, the nurse is
checking the baby and says, "Oh I think she's ready to eat." Mom says, "I just fed
her and I don't want to become a huge pacifier." I suggest S2S, and the
baby, forthwith, is double wrapped, put back in the crib and in a corner.
Tomorrow is Sunday, and I have it off. There will be church and then a
farewell for our senior pastor who is retiring from "active duty" in our church
after 27 years to go on speaking and writing elsewhere. So lots of things to
think about other than some of the discouraging things these past couple of
weeks. Today I'm going to get out the C'mas dishes, and maybe do a bit more
C'mas shopping. My sweet son is home from a 5 week trip to the Middle East
and North Africa and he's coming for dinner tonight....my daughter and her
husband will be here for Thanksgiving, and I've recently seen my oldest daughter
and the grand-boy-baby.
I have wonderful colleagues on Lactnet and elsewhere that are supportive and
precious to me....thank you all for your uplifting words of wisdom and
encouragement to not give up the fight, but to keep on keeping on....
Lots and lots to be thankful for!!
Hugs to you all,
Jan Barger
