How much milk "should" a mother of a baby born at 24 weeks make? It all
depends on many factors. I like to see a full milk supply by day 5 on a
breast pump, hopefully by day 7. If mom got started late in pumping or
didn't pump enough times in the hospital, she may have difficulties
making a full milk supply. What I consider average is for mom to get 3
ounces total from both breasts with each pumping and hopefully she is
pumping 8 times in 24 hours, OR every 3 hours around the clock, night
and day. More often is better than less often. The lowered milk supply
sounds like she is either on a bad pump, not pumping often enough, or
needs bigger flanges. She needs to be on a rental quality pump and if
she thinks her pump isn't working right, it can be checked with vacuumm
gauges. Also, is she on birth control of any kind? It is normal for
mom's milk supply to drop as the weeks go by when she is pumping for a
preemie (because they get lazy and stop pumping enough or because a pump
isn't as good as a baby, or whatever) but it should not happen this fast.
