The Wisconsin Breastfeeding Coalition worked on guidelines to help build
breastfeeding friendly communities around the state. One set was
suggestions for supporting breastfeeding in public spaces. It can be seen
at

For breastfeeding support in other settings, such as places of worship, work
sites, day care, etc. see

We were trying to provide concrete steps that managers of malls, swimming
pools, movie theaters, stores, etc. could take. These can be copied and/or
adapted for any community.

What about using the publicity generated by the Victoria's Secret situation
as an opportunity to help mall and store directors to develop informed,
supportive policies towards breastfeeding mothers and children? I applaud
the work Arly shared with Lactnet, modeling of ways to address issues that
come up at the Nevada County Fair. I think that anticipating questions and
giving suggestions for how to address them was very well done.

Wisconsin's 2005 - 2006 proposed bill to support breastfeeding mothers and
children also died in committee, even though it was very well written.
Politics played a big part in this. The bill was introduced by a Democratic
senator in a Republican-controlled legislature. The committee it was sent
to was headed by a Republican and had a majority of Republican members. The
bill was tied up there and never allowed a public hearing. I personally
wrote individual letters to each member of the committee, but never received
a reply from any of them. I know that others also wrote or contacted
committee members by email and telephone. It is so discouraging.
