It kind of amazes me that Americans ever got SUCH an aversion to the image 
of breastfeeding, when it was so well accepted, less than a century ago! 
There are several silent films where breastfeeding is portrayed, one way or 
another.  One of my favorites is in a WWI epic called "Hearts of the World". 
  There is a scene where the people of a little French town are huddled 
together in one building, trying to protect and comfort each other, as their 
town is crumbling around them.  In the middle of the portrayal of these 
townspeople, stricken with both fear and pain, there is a closeup of a baby 
around a year old, peacefully suckling at his mother's breast.  That was not 
an actress, either, it was a real mother with her child. Her clothing was 
opened from the top and her chest was bare on the side the baby was nursing. 
  It is a beautiful scene, but I suppose some Americans, these days, would 
think it was offensive!
