"Effects of Breast Milk on the Severity and Outcome of Neonatal Abstinence
Syndrome Among Infants of Drug-Dependent Mothers,"
Pediatrics: Mohamed Abdel-Latif and colleagues at the Royal Hospital for
Women in Randwick, Australia, examined the records of 190 "drug-dependent"
women and their infants and determined whether infants who predominantly are
breast-fed experience the same withdrawal symptoms as those who
predominantly are fed formula (Abdel-Latif et al., Pediatrics, 6/6). The
study finds that infants who predominantly are breast-fed have significantly
lower withdrawal scores -- which ranks the severity of the withdrawal --
than infants who predominantly are formula-fed; that the average time of the
withdrawal for predominantly breast-fed infants is 10 days, compared with
three for predominantly formula-fed infants; and that the average treatment
time for the withdrawal is 20 days shorter among infants who predominantly
are breast-fed, Reuters Health reports. Abdel-Latif wrote, "Breast milk ...
reduces the severity (but not the incidence) of neonatal abstinence
syndrome" (Boggs, Reuters Health, 6/9).
