Hello. I am working with a mom that had a hospital aquired staph infection
in her right breast soon after birth. She got it from her mom who had a
staph infection after her c/s. This was 27 years ago and I am repeating
what mom told me. The infection was serious and it required drains and
such. Her breast appeared to develop normally through puberty and
pregnancy. She had no leaking during pregnancy-did on left breast.
Swallowing was not as consistent on this breast while in hospital. Her milk
increased in this breast like normal, but baby and pump not able to remove
much milk. It seems that the milk ducts do not connect to an open nipple
pore. Her engorgement subsided.

Baby is about 4 weeks now. Mom states that baby is fussy on that side due
to small milk volume. Mom does feel that she is gradually able to remove
more and more milk. A teaspoon is about all at this point. She can pump 5
ounces from left breast. We are not suprised at all that she has had
problems. It seems that she is able to produce the milk but not remove it
from the breast. Baby is doing wonderfully on left breast. He has gained a
pound plus and is very satisfied!

My question is--is it possible that her milk ducts will "reconnect". I
have heard that milk ducts can regenerate. Should she continue to offer
breast to baby and pump to see if things improve over time? Again, the
milk supply is not the primary issue-it is removing the milk from the
breast. She is fine with using one breast, but plans to have more babies
and wants to know what to expect.

For those that really understand the anatomy of the breast could you
explain what may have happened to the milk ducts? Her problem reminds me of
what some moms deal with when they have a breast reduction-severed milk
ducts. Thanks. :-)
