Dear all, my daughter, a college junior, is in Mongolia for the semester.
She has written this note... As she was in a home stay on the
Mongolian-Chinese border, in a place with no electricity and no running
water.

"one thing i just thought of to tell you. the one time i watched TV, in a
neighbors house- they had a satellite dish and picked up one Chinese
station, which was then dubbed into Khazak. I actually saw a formula
commercial by the IHILAS company- have you heard of them. it was crazy,
because i was in the absolute middle of nowhere. there isn't running
water with a hundred miles, but you could watch a formula commercial
(which cleverly featured women who looked very modern, in suits in front
of gleaming tall shiny buildings)..... bad news. I just hadn't heard the
name, so i wonder what their game is. i'm sure someone on the list will
know though. the name was IHILAS and it was on a station coming out of
the northwest corner of China.

So, China and the poorer sections too, of Mongolia, etc, are being subjected
to formula advertising, when in fact, there is no clean water, and no
electricity, and absolutely very little in the way of material goods.

Shameful. Kathleen
