MRSA is not a contraindication to breastfeeding. The contraindications are
listed in the AAP policy guidelines and Lawrence. The WHO mastitis document
also states that breastfeeding should continue. AS does the ABM mastitis
document. MRSA is just a type of staph (albiet resistant and more virulent than
others) most likely mom and/or dad is a nasal carrier and baby was exposed well
before the mastitis/abscess developed. MRSA lives for a week on surfaces and
can be transmitted by air. Thus, it is poor counsel to wean as removing the
milk will not prevent this child from getting it and now baby is not getting
antibodies from mother to prevent septicemia or other complications.
