I was BFd for about 2 months and then put on regular cow's milk (which to
this day I do not enjoy drinking). I had my first menses at age ten. My
sister who is two years older than me and also BFd for about 2 months & put
on cow's milk started her periods at 14. We were both skinny kids. I
hadn't started to develop breasts or grow pubic hair and didn't until I was
12. My sister, at 14, was the opposite - she started developing around 13
and got her period a year after she started to develop. So I actually had
my period for a couple of years before my older sister started hers (and I
had to hide the fact as per my mother's instructions so she wouldn't feel
embarrassed about it -- she didn't know until we got talking about it in our
late teens). Someone figure that one out!
I had also read that proximity to the ocean can affect onset of menses as
well. We lived two blocks from the ocean in Victoria, British Columbia,
Canada when I was growing up. Now we're desert dwellers in the Mojave
Desert of Southern California. I'll be interested to see how my kids (all
three are currently nursing - ages six, almost three and 6 weeks old today)
who exclusively BFd for more than year before introduction of solids and
living far away from the ocean affects the girls onset of puberty/menarche
as opposed to me not being BFd very long and living by the ocean.
