This mom should find a radiologist who is able to read a mamogram on the
lactating breast; they are available. You could access info from La Leche
League's website or the Breastfeeding Answer Book, if you have it. I recently heard
from a former client/group mom who has ductal carcinoma with lymph node
metastatis who spent an hour on the phone with me berating the doctors and radiology
centers who told her she could not have a mamogram until she was 6 mos post
weaning. So after nursing for 2 1/2 years and waiting six months, this is what
she is faced with. I only wish she'd ever brought it up with me when she was
having trouble getting a mamogram when lactating (she's in her forties), but
she'd moved away and we weren't in contact. I, for one, will suggest to all
moms who are nursing normal duration to get a mamogram on schedule, from now
on.
