Out here in liberal  California, I've helped more than one woman with 
the nipple ring question.  I've had women leave the jewelry in, and 
others take them out, during pregnancy.  I've had women nurse with the 
ring in while others take them out for those early months when the baby 
is nursing so often, only to put them in for nursing a toddler.  I've 
never encountered anyone with an issue with the nipple ring, although 
some have other normal issues which are unrelated.
