The question with an avian bird flu pandemic is not should babies
continue to be breastfed, but will their mothers survive to breastfeed
them? This is an area where LCs and anyone else for that matter would
do well to become educated about holistic treatments as there are no
anti-viral drugs on the market that have been proven effective. There
are some holistic treatments that I would personally use, including
homeopathy, but the first thing that occurs to me is that the mother
might to well to drink her own milk. Human milk has that lovely quality
that it enhances the immune system (NOT what you want to do once you
have the flu, but ceetainly as a preventative), and it also has
anti-viral properties--the only useful startegy with this flu is to
kill the virus.
