Heidi asks about formaldehyde exposure for a mom who is pumping while she works at a dialysis
center. I do not know about formaldehyde transfer into breastmilk, but I do know that it is not
good for the mother to breathe the fumes.
I have worked in laboratories for many years and formaldehyde should only be used in a chemical
fume hood which will keep fumes out of the working environment. The fact that she can smell
formaldehyde suggests that it is not being used properly and poses a health risk for all employees
and patients at the center. I would suggest that she look at OHSA's website on Formaldehyde
exposure which can be found here:
http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/formaldehyde/index.html
There are monitors which can test levels to determine if they are safe or not, but usually if you are
bothered by the fumes then it's not good. I would hope that the dialysis center would be able to
address the problem, otherwise she may want to consider her other options.
Hope this helps,
Laurie
