My client's 4 month old (exclusive BF) was diagnosed with Salmonella 3 weeks ago, the family was out of town, visiting a sick relative in New York. Mom brought the hospital report: Baby with gastrointestinal symptoms and febrile, stool tested negative for Salmonella, blood culture was positive. No one else in the family was sick and all tested negative for salmonella except baby. Now, for some reason, the doctor in NY suggested that mom have her breastmilk tested to see if that is where the baby got salmonella, test came back today, the breastmilk tested negative, however it was positive for another bacteria, Serratia. Mom has no symptoms at all. the specimen was obtained by a pump that broke so then mom hand expressed. She used clean technique and sterile containers. My first thought was contaminated specimen however mom is concerned, it seems the docs told her that the first blood culture (on baby for salmonella) must have been contaminated so they redrew and again the blood culture was positive.
Are there any risks or cautions for this mom? Her baby has throughout this entire ordeal, been happy and smiley even when she was very ill. Thanks for any information as I can't find anything at all on this organism's affect in the breastmilk.
