Dear Friends:
A hospital where I work as LC doesn't trust s2s. Today, the nursery nurse
was concerned about a one-day old term 5lb 7 oz boy's low temperature, and
it was only with a little coaxing that she let me take him to his mother. He
wasn't interested in the breast, so she hand expressed a teaspoon of her milk
and fed him, then we put him s2s. He and his mother were deeply satisfied.
The nurse came by about 40 minutes later, to take him back to the
nursery. When she took him away from his mother, he flung out his arms, splayed his
fingers and started screaming. It took a few minutes to dress him, with him
protesting all the while. It took a few more minutes to wheel him in his fish
tank back to the nursery. It took a few more minutes for her to get the
thermometer and take his temperature.
His temperature then was 96.1 and the nurse said, "See, s2s doesn't
work." If she had taken his temperature while he was on his mom's chest, instead
of after exposing and stressing him, he would have been warmer. She refused
to recognize this, feeling that she had taken his temperature quickly enough.
    Frustrated today,
