As a breastfeeding mom of a 1-year-old and practitioner of elimination
communication, I have to say that it seems that allergies in infants
are far more common that most people realize. I subscribe to and read
Lactnet as well as an Elimination Communcation Yahoo Group and it's
really surprising to me how often the issue of allergies comes up on
the latter (EC), and how often it's related to the former
(breastfeeding).

For breastfeeding mothers, baby's stooling patterns--in particular,
infrequent pooping in newborns--are one of the first red flags of an
allergy. The most common is dairy, although since Lachlan's mom is on
a vegan diet that clearly is not at fault here. But the suggestion of
a possible soy allergy is one that certainly deserves consideration.
Eliminating soy from the diet may show an improvement in stooling; if
not that, then corn and wheat or other common allergens should be
investigated before assuming that Lachlan's stooling patterns are just
one end of "normal."

Diana Steele,
Mom to 1-year-old Mariana
