Nikki,

I am so completely appalled with all the HEAD RAMMING that is going
around also. Most of my consults involve moms who hold the center of their
babies heads, have what I call "petrified wrist"--wrists don't bend, so mom can
place palm in baby's upper back. The re-education usually involves-- we push
the baby's upper back, NOT the head (no one likes their head pushed), the chin
should hit the breast first, NOT the nose. The better we get the baby
nestled in chin first, the more likely the nose will not bury into the breast.
Head ramming causes the chin to go down to the chest. Most of my lactation ed
involves CHIN IN--NOSE OUT. When the nose is in and chin out--the angle is
off, and it will most often result in sore nipples.

ALL nurses learn that patients swallow better when head is elevated
than flexed--this is a basic nursing concept. Flexed necks makes it more
difficult to swallow for the infant and it CAUSES pain for the mother. Also, chin
doesn't "knead" the breast, so the baby is NOT nursing as effectively as
possible. I even do this ed over the phone with the Kellymom.com latching and
positioning page--(THANKS KELLY!)

I can't tell
you how many mothers are taught to "ram" the baby onto the breast, or fight
with the baby to breastfeed every two hours.
