Let's not forget the LVN (Licensed Vocational nurse), RNP (Registered Nurse Practitioner, who I see for my annual check-ups) and PAs (Physician Assistants...I think that is like an RNP, but you need not be an RN first). Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Just more examples of how a very well-respected profession (nursing) has many many designations that are not well-understood by the public! BTW, my mom was an RN for decades and is now a hospital administrator, so I have had more exposure to this termoniolgy than the average non-medical person, and I'm still not sure exactly which is which!

Subject: Re: lactation designations
Actually RNs have a plethora of designations in US. RN can mean 2,3 or 4
year course! All take the same exam! You can be RN, ADN (2 yr college
level-with some hospital); RN (3 yr hospital based with some college) or RN,
BSN (4 yr college-with some hospital hospital). All of which is stupid!
Any attempts to fix over the past decades have all failed :-( Pat in SNJ
