I agree with Sanna-Mari. There has been some fascinating studies about the
germ-fighting qualities of xylitol in everything from sinus infections to
dental care. I read a study a few years ago that concluded that babies of
breastfeeding moms who consume xylitol end up having far fewer cavities!
Those who consumed xylitol continued to have lower levels of decay than
those who didn't, even after they discontinued consumption.

Nowadays xylitol is appearing in many other products besides gum; you can
even buy it in granular form to sweeten tea and other foods. It's more
expensive than sugar, but it's nothing compared with the dental bills they
will hopefully help that family to avoid.
