Hi All,

Today I met another gastric bypass patient with insufficient milk supply --
my third in less than a month. Although the procedure is becoming
increasingly common and I'm sure will continue to do so, I'm not coming up
with much specific breastfeeding information to guide me. I did do some
research after the first patient I saw, and found info about the dangers of
B12 and zinc deficiencies in mom and, subsequently, breastfeeding baby.

I also realize that Metoclopramide (Reglan) is out of the question because
it increases intestinal motility, which isn't acceptable when the intestines
have been so dramatically shortened.

I wondered about the effectiveness/safety of Domperidone (trade name:
Motilium). Given Domperidone's trade name, it doesn't sound too promising;
however it's supposedly used to treat reflux and nausea, so I'm holding out
hope.

I'm also curious as to the action of the popular herbal galactogogues, and
their safety and effectiveness for post-bypass patients. Given that GB
patients need to take four times the quantity of some supplements in order
to absorb the same amount as someone with "normal plumbing," I don't know if
herbal galactogogues would be useful. They're available in easily
absorbable forms like tinctures and teas, so I hoped they could be used
safely by these patients.

Anyone have any research/experience with this situation? Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.
