I am working with a mom that has an almost 3 month old. The baby has
laryngomalacia. Basically the little guy has a hard time breathing. He is nursing
well except he tends to go on and off during the feed. Many feedings he is
crying off and on. He is gaining very well. He went from about 6.5 pounds to 14
pounds! Mom has a lot of milk. I have mom nursing on one side for about 2-3
feedings and then switching. I also showed her how to nurse with the baby
sitting upright. Mom is not comfortable with gas medications because she is not
sure of long-term effects. I also put the baby in a sling in a scrunched up
position that he liked and it helped him expel gas. I watched him nurse last
night. He had his first 6 hours of sleep after she went home. She was so happy he
slept. She thinks maybe she should just pump and nurse. I am not sure this
would solve anything. The doctors tell her to add cereal and pump. They also
told her to not nurse as much. In terms of this condition the doctors say to
wait and watch. They are not suggesting any type of surgery. The baby breathes
so hard. If you have any suggestions for the gas/pain or this condition
please let me know.
