A Grav 3 Para 3 mother has a baby with a central cleft of the hard palate,
and some soft palate involvement too. Mother has lovely elastic breasts
and this baby is serious about eating! Mother breast fed previous baby for
2 years.
Baby was born via Caesarean, cleft diagnosed at birth. Baby placed
skin-to-skin with mother within about 30 minutes. Assisted to breast about
15 minutes later. Comfortable latch with observable swallowing. Speech
therapist did digital exam and confirmed good suction. (My first experience
with a speech therapist who has not sabotaged breastfeeding!) Mother
started with minimal breast pumping late on first day until about day 4.
Baby breastfeeds in normal position with no regugitation.
Baby is 5 days old, exclusively breastfed from birth and gaining weight!
My question is - can we expect this progress to continue? Baby will have
repair surgery at about 4/5 months.
