Sounds like their intentions were good, just misguided. Rather than  
get into a long,
potentially contentious, discussion about what was wrong, how about  
creating a list
  of what would be great for them to hand out. These stores want to  
hand out
freebies, it's part of good promotion that people go home with  
something in hand.
They could hand out baby rattles, coupons toward car seats, bibs,  
diapers, receiving
blankets, onesies,  sports water bottle for the moms (the empty kind,  
with the big straws).
  The possibilities are endless.
