Pam asks about using breastmilk-soaked Q-tip swabs for performing oral care
on NICU babies.
I know of at least one large academic hospital here that does this. As far
as possible the very first thing in the baby's mouth is a drop of mom's
colostrum. Thereafter babies who are NPM will have their mouths cleaned
with EBM.
The hospital where I work only cares for non-ventilated preterm babies and I
do my level best to get breastmilk into their mouths rather than use the
glycerine swabs.
