As a breastfeeding counselor, I have found that mothers who share with me
that they are smoking marijuana, or drinking more than they think
is "safe" for a breastfeeding mother, are sometimes depressed and anxious.
Moms tell us things that they are not necessarily comfortable sharing with
traditional HCP's. Knowing whether or not there is a safety point for
illegal substances may not be as important as why mothers are asking for
the info. Encouragement to seek help for Postpartum Depression, and
telling mothers that it is ok and not anything to be ashamed of while
reassuring them that they can (and should) continue to breastfeed if meds
are prescribed can help a mother get well. A thought...because marijuana
is "natural" do some think it is preferable or safer than pharmaceuticals?
