Great points, Heather, about a middle ground between all formula and
all breastmilk. I think another option for moms is to focus more on
themselves and their babies enjoying breastfeeding, and forget about
how much milk is being delivered. Baby can be fed a bottle, and then
have dessert and cuddle time at the breast. The baby may nurse for
longer, even into toddlerhood, if the mother focuses more on making
breastfeeding a pleasurable bonding time, rather than a battle to
wring every last milliliter out! And of course, the mother can
combine some pumping of her milk, with some comfort nursing, and use
bottles and formula the rest of the time. Some mothers are extremely
focused on the milk supply aspect of breastfeeding, and are less
concerned with the bonding/nursing aspect, but usually I think it is
nice to remind mothers that it's ok to just enjoy breastfeeding and
let their babies enjoy it without hyperfocusing on milk transfer.
