I'm looking for some advice/comments/interesting input.
Our local YMCA, we've recently discovered, has a policy that breastfeeding
is OK as long as it's discreet. (Sigh...and the meaning of discreet is?)
My co-Leader was approached by a lifeguard and was told to cover up b/c
this is a "family place". She was bfing as discreetly as one can in a
swimsuit. Her daughter is 8 months old and refuses to bf under a
blanket. My 1 year old is the same. We've gone to the Aquatic Director
and she firmly stated that this is the organization's policy (I'm not sure
if national or local) and it won't change. (After all, she said, "There
are 12&13 year old boys out there"....to which I replied, "and they need
to know the bfing is the normal way to feed babies, too"). :-) I'm now
planning on talking to the Executive Director. I gave the Aquatic Dir.
info on the Loving Support campaign here in the DHHS of WI on being a
bfing friendly business and public breastfeeding. I also printed off the
media articles from the nurse-in that occurred last Jan. at the Ann Arbor
YMCA.
Now, I'm not rushing to organize a nurse-in. I want to give this business
every chance to change their policy. I am a member and don't want to
create huge waves, but this policy is ridiculous. I really think they
won't budge. We explained how the term "discreet" is open to
interpretation. That sometimes babies don't want to bf discreetly, should
they then go hungry? That, in essence, they can turn mothers off from
bfing with this policy. It's anything but family friendly. Etc.
Thanks in advance,
Laurel Franczek
LLL Leader
Any suggestions for where to go from here? I may call on my lactivist
friends to start a letter writing campaign.
