While this could be an infection, I would lean toward allergy. The
other thing I would consider is the mother's tissue integrity. She may
well be deficient in zinc, magnesium, vit A and/or VitD and essential
fatty acids. I also agree with the person who mentioned calendula as
topical treatment. The worst situation I ever saw like this was in a
mom who was allergic to many foods and toothpaste in her baby's mouth.
She was finally seen by a dermatologist who recommended the herbal
supplement tanalbit. It was the only thing that worked. I currently
have a mom using it to heal a chronic fungal infection that kept her
from putting her last baby to breast (she pumped for almost a year),
before she becomes pregnant again.
