My hospital currently has 3 full time lactation consultanta for 
approximately 4800 babies/year. One consultant works 5 8-hour shifts per 
week, one for 4 10-hour shifts and one for 3 12 hour shifts.  We are able 
to provide 7day/week coverage and breast pump rentals.  Our standard of 
care is to see every first time breastfeeding dyad, NICU Moms and all 
referrals.  

This is my question. Where does the 1 LC for every 1000 deliveries come 
from?  I am looking for the evidence based research to provide my director 
who feels this figures includes outpatient services.  Have any standards 
for hospital based LC's been developed yet by ILCA, AWHONN or JACHO as 
relates to the number of LC's per number of deliveries per year?  I would 
appreciate any information that members of this list could provide.
