I received this email and have permission to post. I have already
referred this mother to the 3 breastfeeding laws in Minnesota (which
likely will not help her much). Does anyone have any other thoughts or
ideas I could give her? I do not know the reason for the court
appearance, but I understand it has nothing to do with breastfeeding. She
would appreciate any ideas.
I have a serious question and was hoping you could help me. Today my
husband was speaking with his lawyer about a conflict with timing made for
our court case. It requires a five hour drive and was scheduled for 1:30
pm (ordered by the court magistrate overseeing our case) until our court
appointed attorney decided to change it to 9am without speaking with us
first. We will have a seven week old (assuming it is born on time) and we
choose to breastfeed. We explained to the attorney that it was not
possible to drive there at that time in the morning when taking into
consideration that I am the sole driver in our family and will need to
stop to breastfeed along the way. He told my husband to "drop the kid off
at your parent's" and scoffed when we reminded him that it would be
breastfed and that wouldn't be possible. He refuses to change the court
time to allow for us to take proper care of our child. At one point in
time he said "I don't care. Stay at the mission if you have to". The
mission is essentially a place for homeless people in the twin cities
area. I have been unable to express breastmilk, or leaving my child with
my parents would be a more viable option. We felt this was discrimanatory
and feel that we should have the right to choose to have our newborn child
with us due to breastfeeding laws. What do I do about this?
