Hi.
As in the process of framing a lecture for student midwives, I was
searching different sources for the composition of preterm breastmilk,
starting with the third edition of the "Breastfeeding and human
Lactation". On page 103 it reads "...the energy density of preterm
mother's milk is much greater than that of full-term mother's milk, owing
to a 30% higher fat concentration (Atkinson, Anderson & Bryan, 1980)".
Lawrence's old edition(fifth edition, pag 447)instead reads: "Preterm milk
contains similar fat content in quality and quantity, although Anderson et
al reported increased values for preterm milk over term milk "
aknowledging lack of data probably, but fitting with my (old?)knowledge.
The info I could retrieve from a quick surf on recent abstracts in PubMed
substantially agree with Lawrence's. Now, it troubles me that the former
textbook is a "staplefood" for IBLCE applicants, and its information might
be inaccurate(?)or out of date(?). What does the new Lawrence's edition
say? any other qualified source of information o published article?
