Kristen: Here in Central NY, two hospitals are doing a simple, yet highly effective program called the baby weigh station. All BF mothers are given an appointment at discharge for a weight check in 2-3 days. (There is assistance for problems as well). The WS program and staff are known by the physicians, recieve referrals and make referrals when necessary. The WS is in the hospital (2 empty rooms on the PP floor with equipment) . It is staffed by the Nurse manager of the OB service and the BF coordinator at WIC. There is an LC who also works there part time. They prepare the expectant mothers at WIC visits, and during the hospital stay and have a good follow-up. reate. The mothers and babies can return as many times as necessary. There is no fee. The staff and some "graduates" of the WS program made a nice presentation at a recent regional conference in Syracuse, In lieu of speaker fees, a donation was made to the WS. One nurse manage just tokd me on Wed. that they recently had a
90% initiation rate and 80% at 1 month. Anne Andrianos in Syracuse, NY
