Just one more word on stockpiling milk - a lot of moms like to have a big
"stash" of milk to use in case they aren't able to pump enough. Nice idea,
in theory, but when you're counseling moms about going back to work - be
sure they understand that if they can't pump enough during the day and make
up the difference using their stored milk, this will reduce their supply
exactly like if they are using formula. Not in one day, but I tell moms to
shoot for a balanced week. If she doesn't pump enough on Friday, fine, use
milk from the freezer, but be sure you've pumped extra to replace it by the
next week - or, better yet, just add in a pumping session or pump longer or
reduce those extra bottles or whatever you have to do to keep what you're
pumping in a day-to-day balance with what your baby is consuming.
A lot of moms have no idea that using this frozen milk to make up for a
shortfall will impact their supply - be sure they understand that it will. I
made this same mistake myself 6 years ago, and was just astonished when that
stash of milk was used up so quickly and I was faced with supplementing with
formula! I worked my way out of it without supplementing, but could have
saved a lot of trouble by not getting in that situation in the first place.
I have a piece for moms about the "freezer stash trap" on my website:

Now I'm dashing off to teach my "Breastfeeding for Working Mothers" class!
