I have permission to post from a patient I saw this afternoon. She has a
baby in NICU and was having problems finding a bra that fit her properly. She
claims she had a similar problem with her older child 2 1/2 yrs ago, but
can't remember what she did with the bras she had then. Her difficulty is she
wears a size 40 and while she wears a DD on one breast her other breast is a
FF. I recommended she check out JCPenney or WalMart. Her Mom went to
Nordstrom's and found a DD with a wire and it is really crushing in her breasts. It
is also very tight across her back.
She claims she will have enormous amounts of milk and today on Day 3 she was
pumping almost 6 oz at a time and she stopped because she was afraid she
would overstimulate and cause more engorgement. She has soft nipples and someone
had given her shells which were not helping because when erect after pumping
they were too small for the shell openings. The tight fit of bra would
flatten in the nipples. I suggested she ditch the shells, keep the flaps down on
bra after pumping if in the pump room in NICU and then proceed to the baby so
he could latch on some nicely lengthened nipples. I reassured her that she
won't cause too much stim if she pumps for about 15-20 minutes on low while at
home every 3 hours to have a supply to take to hospital when she visits.
The concern is the bra. I am concerned that if she continues with the
Nordstorm's bra she may cause some clogged ducts or mastitis. She says the other bras
where purchased in Texas but she can't remember where.
I told I would post in hopes someone in the next day or so will give me a
lead for her to check out for a more comfortable bra....she is not opened to
going braless since the weight is so great.
Any suggestions can be posted or emailed to me privately.
