I routinely added acidophilus/bifidus to any kind of formula supplement I
had to give my adopted babies, in the Lact-Aid. I figured that it was one
more way to make the formula a little more like breast milk. I felt like it
was especially important when using a formula that contained some kind of
sugar besides lactose. I started that with my third of six babies, and felt
like it was a definite advantage. Those who had it never had much in the
way of symptoms of thrush, despite the fact that I had it, and they almost
never had diarrhea or constipation or diaper rash. I have also recommended
it routinely to other moms who need to supplement their milk supply, as well
as anyone whose baby had had antibiotics.
My favorite was Primadophilus for Children, which was formulated for
children under five years old. It was one of the few that would dissolve
completely, so that it didn't clog the Lact-Aid tube. Rubbing a bit of the
powder right inside the mouth of a baby with thrush works very well, too,
much better than Nystatin! Of course, Mom should be taking some
acidophilus, too, as well as avoiding sugar.
