I seem to be engaged in a semi-permanent war with multiple basal- and
squamous-cell skin cancers. My entire life mission as a teenager was to turn this
blinding-white skin into something darker. Since I lived in a So. CA beach
town, I believe I spent most of my adolescence with a sunburn. Middle-age is
of course, the time to pay the piper for such foolishness.
Most of these are only on the surface, but if left untreated they do become
invasive, requiring more extensive surgery (Good news: I got a cute "nose
job", Bad News: I have a scar all the way across). While it is true that some
spots can be excised or "frozen", both leave scars. The advantage of using
Aldara is that it "seeks and destroys" not only smaller cancers, but
pre-cancerous cells as well, leaving no scars. The first time I used it my face was
one entire scab and I looked like Swamp Thing. It can also be applied to known
problem areas, rather than the whole face. Additionally, there are other
topical meds, such as Efudex. I'll leave it to our Drs. Nice or Hale to speak
to which would be better for a nursing mother.
Additionally they are now using a lamp to create an all-over sunburn to
treat (makes no sense to me, since sunburn caused the problems in the first
place, but what do I know?)
All this to say that the mother has several options which she may want to
discuss with one or possibly two or three dermatologists.
I hope there is something helpful here for this mother.
