Breast milk isn't for buying and selling
Regarding "Land of milk and money / Breast-milk enterprise raises 
concerns among those who view collection and distribution as a 
philanthropic endeavor" (News, Feb. 12):
I was shocked to find out that we now have a new venue to exploit 
young mothers. Where do we draw the line to make a dollar in this 
country?
I do believe it is a very generous gift to donate breast milk for 
critically ill and premature infants. But the company Prolacta 
proposes to sell its pasteurized breast milk to hospitals as a 
biopharmaceutical product that will further increase the already 
astronomical costs associated with caring for premature infants.
It plans on charging $10 for each 2-teaspoon dose of breast milk. 
With part of its profit, it plans on partially funding pregnancy 
clinics and breast-feeding classes. Therefore, Prolacta is creating a 
way not only to educate young mothers about the benefits of breast 
feeding but also to exploit them for profit. Am I the only one who 
sees this as a conflict of interest?
What regulatory agency is going to monitor these breast-feeding 
classes? Who will make sure the women are not being pressured to 
donate breast milk? Who is going to protect these young mothers from 
being victimized by Prolacta's greed? These issues need to be 
explored before this business destroys all of the nonprofit donation 
centers in this country.
