I have seen several cases of crusty nipples when moms were using Vitamin
A&D for sore nipples.  Don't ask me why they were doing this, but for
some reason, they were being told to use the baby  vitamin drops on sore
nipples.  It seems to cause keratinization as the skin cells heal.  In
these cases, I advised the moms to use saline solution compresses and
this seemed to speed up the healing process as healthy skin cells
reproduce best in a saline environment.
