I like to put the suggestions in terms of making pumping as much like having baby at the breast as possible. I point out that "letting down" the milk to a soft, cuddly baby is very different from a hard, cold, mechanical machine! So I point out how to try to mimic the various senses:
-Sight - have a picture of baby to look at (even kiss) -I like that somepumps have a space for a picture in the case
-Smell - a blanket or piece of baby clothing (unwashed) to sniff and drape over mom's shoulders - By the time I retired, it had become pretty much standard for the NICU nurses to send a used blanket from baby's bed back to mom's room with her and even for her to take home.
-Touch - breast massage or even just rolling or brushing the nipple with your fingers (let's get those so-important nerve endings stimulated) - I think this is why some find warm compresses helpful, as it may be the touch as much as the warmth itself that helps
-Sound - having a tape of baby making sounds - not always practical and easy, but a nice addition to the bag of tricks
-Taste - haven't quite figured out the best way to mimic this one, but since smell and taste are so closely related, perhaps smelling the blanket suffices.
